How is Your Depression Working for You? Part 2 of 2

Posted by Second Chance to Live on October 4, 2009

Please read Part 1 of 2 for context. Thank you.

I discovered that I could use my depression to make healthy changes. I discovered that instead of being used by my depression I could use my depression.

My depression motivated me to move beyond my pain. My depression brought me a place of awareness — where I could begin to accept reality — so that I could stop fighting against myself. Through reaching a place of acceptance I found the courage to get into action.

The events that led to and kept me in the depression –as I shared above — motivated me to face a reality. My depression and emotional pain became the catalyst that gave me the courage to realize that I needed to make some changes. I am in the process of making those changes.

Today’s Thought

When I am experiencing depression, I can ask myself, “How is my Depression working for Me?” Am I allowing my depression to use me or am I using my depression? By addressing my sadness and depression — because I don’t like or want to accept reality –  I can use my depression / sadness to enhance my quality of life and my relationships. I can in turn take the action to make healthy decisions and choices.

Note:

I am not a medical Dr. or a psychiatrist, however if you are experiencing ongoing depression I would encourage you to please consult with a medical Dr. or psychiatrist. Medicine –  that a medical Dr. or psychiatrist prescribes — may help to address and alleviate your depression.

Your depression may be due to a medical, neurological or psychological condition that needs to be treated with medications. The medications that your Dr. prescribes can help to replace or enhance what your brain may be lacking or not producing — and there is no shame in getting meds to treat depression. Trust me — I know.
