Traumatic Brain Injury Support for Survivors, their Families and Friends Part 2

Posted by Second Chance to Live on January 15, 2011

If you have not already read Part 1 of this article, please do so now. Thank you.

In the wake of that article, I decided to write an article to offer the links to the articles that I provided to Gabrielle Giffords, her family and friends. My hope is that as individuals who have sustained brain injuries, their family and friends read these articles, they will be encouraged, motivated, empowered and given hope to live with in the aftermath of the brain injury. My hope is that as these articles are read the brain injury survivor will continue be supported once their physical injuries and wounds have healed.

Although our physical wounds and external injuries may have healed the impact of our traumatic brain injuries remain. My encouragement to families and friends of individual who have sustained brain injuries, go on-line and research — through the Google and the other search engines — how the injury to your loved one’s brain may continue to affect his or  her behavior and cognitive abilities. My experience has shown that denying, dismissing, minimizing or marginalizing the injuries to our brains does not help anyone, but will only serve to create rifts and divides between the brain injury survivor, their families and friends. Becoming educated on the effects of the injuries to our brains will empower all parties involved.

If you love and care about the traumatic brain injury survivor, do the research to understand how the injury to your loved ones brain – although invisible – may continue to impact their life and their relationship with you. As you do the research, you will gain understanding, insight and compassion. By doing so you will empower your relationship with the survivor and their relationship with you.

As an individual who has lived with a traumatic brain injury and an invisible disability for 43 years I speak from my experience, strength and hope and through the power of identification. As you read through the articles found with in Part 1 of this series and the articles in this part, I believe my perspective will enhance your awareness, insight and understanding. As you have questions, please feel free to ask. All questions are good questions. Here is a link to my Contact Page http://wp.me/P3atD-2M where you can leave a confidential email or comment.
